Local government and council roads are plagued with costly maintenance bills on their vast network of unpaved roads on an annual basis. This does not take into account the significant budgets that need to be allocated for road dust control every year. Cypher Environmental has some unique solutions to help municipal and county officials better manage their road networks in the form of more long term solutions for stabilization of secondary roads, resulting in reduced annual maintenance requirements. We have also recently engineered an alternative to highly corrosive chloride based products, such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, which have been prevalently used on county roads in the past. Our non-chloride alternatives are just as economically priced, yet with no adverse impact on the environment and safe to use around the sensitive agricultural fields that surround most municipal road networks. Municipalities also quite commonly have the burden of treating their own wastewater, Cypher also has solutions to ease this burden and improve the efficiency of any wastewater treatment facility, with no negative impact on the environment.

What is a cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative to chlorides for road dust control?

Chlorides, in the form of MgCl (Magnesium Chloride) and CaCl (Calcium Chloride) are by far the most abundantly used products on the market for road dust control. This is mainly due to their extremely low cost, although unfortunately also comes at the expense of the environment due to their highly corrosive nature. Dust/Blokr® was specifically engineered to be comparable in cost to the chloride based dust suppressants, while using inputs that result in no adverse impact on the environment, and no corrosive side-effects. The product is applicable to a wide range of road types and material types, and is the ideal cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to road salts for any municipal projects.

How can we design and build roads to save money, long term?

The proper engineering design of roads is important to ensure long term performance and reductions in maintenance requirements and costs. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of proper road building materials and proper shaping and drainage. In cases where some clay content exists, Road//Stabilizr® is the ideal solution for long term stability of roads, better performance in wet weather, and ultimately providing for a road that needs much less long term maintenance. Materials with a high clay content are typically cheaper than traditional materials used to build roads, so their inclusion in re-sheeting or new road builds can allow for reduced costs to build. However even greater savings can be realized when the in situ materials are already abundant in clay, so no new material needs to be hauled in for the road re-sheeting process. Ultimately, the enhanced bonding and stability of the clay fraction of the road allows for greater stability, providing for a much higher performing road.

How can we reduce the amount of aggregates used on our road building process?

Aggregates can be a costly and hard to find material in some locations. This can lead to longer distances to haul for road builds, leading to further costs associated with the project. Road//Stabilizr® works specifically to stabilize the clay fraction of materials, allowing for materials with less aggregate to be used to build high performance secondary roads. This enables municipalities and counties to reduce their burden of having to hunt down and source more expensive aggregate materials.
